Preschool First Day: Easy Parent Tip
Written by Fran Matthews

How should you prepare your children for their first day of preschool? What should you say to them? What should you do? Will they cry? Will they let you out the classroom door? Will they want to leave when you return to pick them up? Will they want to go back the next day? These are some of the questions I had as my child was nearing 3 years old, and preparing to go to early childhood preschool.

Sometimes, parents can make things more difficult than they really need to be. We read books and articles in order to prepare ourselves and help us teach our children.

My own daughter was very excited to attend preschool. However, there was one challenge I had to conquer. She thought that I would be able to stay with her the whole time. I prepared my daughter by using her dolls to role-play what she would be experiencing. We had mommy dolls take little girl dolls to dolly preschool and say “Bye Bye Mommy." We then had the little girl dolls go through some of things they might do there. We had the dolls pretend to paint, read stories, play in a sand box, have snacks, and so on. Then we had the mommy dolls return to pick up the little girl dolls and give them hugs upon greeting.

On the first day of preschool, my daughter actually said “Bye Bye Mommy” as I was trying to slip out the door. It was music to my ears. She loved the experience so much that she did not want to leave when I went to pick her up! It really can be that easy. My daughter loves preschool, and hopefully your child will, too.
