Barbie and Ken: Sew Fourth of July Clothes for Ken
Written by Fran Matthews

Your Ken-size doll can look sharp as he barbecues this Fourth of July. Sew him a one-of-a kind outfit especially designed to impress Barbie along with his friends and family.

Imagine the scene: A crowd has assembled in front of the barbeque. They plan to spend a warm afternoon at an enjoyable party. Ken is making the hamburgers. What does he need to wear? How should he be dressed? Of course, he will be wearing casual, comfortable clothes. Oh yes, I can see it now, he is wearing an apron as he cooks the food. Getting closer, I can see that he has a casual shirt on with shorts. Everyone is excited about the Fourth of July Holiday, and I'm sure his clothes send a patriotic message. He is happy and at peace, is enjoying the company of friends, and plans to have a great time.

What do you need in order to sew this outfit for yourself? Actually, it can be done with materials that are commonly found around the house. Below is a list of these items. Feel free to adapt this list to your needs or customize as you see fit:

Materials:

  • Ken-size doll shirt and shorts patterns
  • Paper, Pen, Scissors
  • White fabric for apron
  • Iron-on transfer for apron
  • Patriotic fabrics for the shirt and shorts

Directions:

1. Follow your Ken-size doll patterns to sew his shirt and shorts

2. Design an apron pattern and make one out of the white fabric

3. Iron a patriotic logo onto the white apron

It is always fun to pick out coordinating fabrics for a project like this. I chose to make a collared short-sleeve red shirt that features a patriotic star print. It has front-snap closure with 2 decorative white buttons for a finished appearance. I then made elastic-waist red, white, and blue striped shorts that coordinate well with the shirt. I designed a white apron that slips overhead and ties in the back. Uncle Sam's patriotic hat is the featured logo I then ironed onto the front of the apron.

Your Ken-size doll can wear these clothes all summer long, not just on the Fourth of July. Whether he is cooking for Barbie, friends, or family, your Ken-size doll will surely get a few laughs, or least a smile or two. And, if he is cooking for his fellow employees at a company barbecue, it is a great opportunity for him to score some points with his boss by showing his sense of humor and willingness to encourage a pleasant team environment. Enjoy the Holiday!
