Ken Doll Scrubs: Handmade Medical Uniforms and Lab Coat with Style
Written by Fran Matthews
Would you like your 12-inch Ken doll to be a doctor? Maybe you would like him to be a nurse, radiologist, pharmacist, or surgeon? Whatever your career choice, make sure he has the proper scrubs and laboratory coat to wear. After all, it is important to look professional, even if you are a doll.
When designing my lab coat for Ken-size dolls, I chose to use durable white fabric. The coat needed to be rugged enough to withstand a heavy workload, as Medical Professionals tend to work long hours. And, I used white just because that appears to be the most common and versatile color for lab coats. The coat also had to have pockets for his medical equipment. So, I made sure to sew 3 real, usable pockets on the lab coat for him.
The medical scrubs I designed for Ken consist of 4 essentials: a mask, a hat, a shirt, and a pair of pants. My video uses a celery green cotton fabric because this is the color I see doctors wear most often. Of course, one can use all sorts of colors and patterns when making medical scrubs. The choice depends on personal preferences and Ken’s workplace policies.
Comfort and flexibility were important considerations as I designed the pants. To make sure that the pants had a loose fit, I used an elastic waistband. For the shirt, I secured the back with Velcro closure and added a pocket in front that is real and usable, just like I did on the lab coat. The mask and hat both have real ties to secure behind the Ken doll’s head.
Barbie and Ken are fun to play with and pretty to look at. But since they have bills to pay, they have to work, too. So if you decide that you would like your Ken doll to be a doctor or other medical professional, consider sewing him a set of scrubs with a lab coat.
