How should you prepare your children for their first day of preschool? What should you say to them? What should you do? Will they cry? Will they let you out the classroom door? Will they want to leave when you return to pick them up? Will they want to go back the next day? These are some of the questions I had as my child was nearing 3 years old, and preparing to go to early childhood preschool. |

When attending dance class just isn’t enough, join a dance club! If you don’t know of any local dance clubs to join, start one yourself. There are many benefits to being a part of such a club, and I will give you 8 of them. You’ll have fun creating a mission statement for your club and determining the qualifications and any potential fees associated with it. But first, what can you do as a member of a dance club?

The truth is that a large percentage of people are not completely satisfied with the way their bodies look. For a dancer, this truth can be overwhelming. In a dance class, the mirror is used as a visual aid, allowing the dancer to see artistic shapes and patterns. It is supposed to help with body awareness and proper technique. Why then, do many dancers dread the thought of looking at themselves in the mirror? What awful body stereotypes and unrealistic expectations are causing dancers to have such a lack of love and appreciation for their own bodies?

I can remember attending award banquets as a child to see my older siblings receive honors. The evenings were long, hot, and uncomfortable as we all sat on the hard bleachers in the gymnasium. My one hope was that after the lengthy ceremony, there would be cool beverages and yummy cookies. It was so disappointing if there were no refreshments waiting for us.

“Would you please talk to my daughter? She wants to take jazz dance instead of ballet. Please tell her that this would be a big mistake!” This was a desperate plea I often heard as a dance instructor. It was a familiar situation. There are many styles of jazz dance, but what the dance student often wanted in this situation was the hip hop or funky style of jazz dance. This of course, horrified the parent who had dreams of her daughter becoming a prima ballerina with a prestigious ballet company. |
